REW's Recommended Engine Break-in Procedure
Following this precise procedure is critical for seating rings, ensuring component longevity, and achieving maximum performance from your newly machined engine. Do not skip the cool-down periods.
Phase 1: Initial Start-Up and Inspection
Prep: Fill with fresh fluids (at correct levels) and install new filters. Use a standard-grade motor oil of the correct type for your powersports application (e.g., never use automotive oil in a wet-clutch engine).
First Start: Start the engine and run for a maximum of 10 seconds, then shut it off immediately.
Listen carefully for any unusual noises. Address any issues before proceeding.
Re-check all fluid levels and inspect thoroughly for leaks.
Phase 2: Thermal Cycling (Static Run-In)
1st Idle Cycle: Start the engine and let it idle for 10 full minutes without revving or riding. Adjust the idle speed if necessary.
Cool Down: Allow the engine to fully cool down to ambient (room) temperature. This may take a few hours or, ideally, overnight.
2nd Idle Cycle: Start the engine and let it idle for another 10 full minutes.
Cool Down: Allow the engine to fully cool down again to ambient temperature.
Phase 3: Load Cycling (Riding Run-In)
Crucial: During all riding cycles (Steps 7-12), constantly accelerate and decelerate the engine within the prescribed throttle range. DO NOT maintain a constant RPM or throttle setting.
Ride Cycle 1 (Low Load): Ride for 10 minutes using only 1st and 2nd gear and less than 50% throttle.
Cool Down: Allow the engine to fully cool down to ambient temperature.
Ride Cycle 2 (Medium Load): Ride for 10 minutes using up to 4th gear and up to 75% throttle.
Cool Down: Allow the engine to fully cool down to ambient temperature.
Ride Cycle 3 (High Load): Ride for 10 minutes using up to top gear and up to 100% throttle.
Cool Down: Allow the engine to fully cool down to ambient temperature.
Phase 4: Final Inspection and Prep
Final Run: Ride the machine for an additional 10 minutes in any manner you choose.
Final Cool Down: Allow the engine to fully cool down.
Inspection & Flush: Drain all fluids and remove filters. Check the fluids and filters carefully for any metallic particles. Note: A small amount of fine debris or silver discoloration (from assembly lubes) is normal, but if you have any questions or find larger particles, contact us immediately before proceeding.
Refill: Install new filters and refill with your fresh, high-quality operating fluids.
Highly Recommended: Check and adjust valve clearances at this point to ensure proper seating and operation.
Enjoy: Your engine is ready. Rip it and enjoy the performance!
Crucial Disclaimer: Read Before Operation
By utilizing the services provided by Revive Engine Works (BKR Performance LLC) and operating the engine post-assembly, the customer acknowledges and agrees to the following terms:
1. Customer Responsibility: The customer assumes full and complete responsibility for the proper final installation, adjustment, tuning, and break-in of the engine. Failure to strictly adhere to the Recommended Break-in Procedure will void all implied or stated warranties.
2. No Warranty: Due to the nature of powersports engines, high-performance modifications, and factors beyond our control (such as installation, tuning, maintenance, and rider use), Revive Engine Works (BKR Performance LLC) offers NO WARRANTY, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, on engine parts or machine work once the engine has been started. This includes, but is not limited to, damage caused by improper break-in, detonation, overheating, lack of lubrication, or poor tuning.
3. High Performance Use: All performance work is intended for competition and off-road use only. The customer assumes all risks associated with high-performance engine operation.
4. Required Checks: The engine requires final checks for clearances, fluid levels, and valve adjustments prior to first start-up.
5. Contact for Concerns: If any unusual noises, leaks, or immediate concerns are noted during the break-in process, shut off the engine immediately and contact Revive Engine Works (BKR Performance LLC) before proceeding.
Operate at your own risk.
